I'll be honest. I actually thought about not blogging anymore. But who can resist a webpage with pictures and text all about themselves! I probably should spend a few sentences explaining what I've been doing the past month or 2 but I'm lazy so here is the new stuff:

I am in London England with Brian visiting Bruce, Sarka, Misha, AnnaMarie, and Kristina. Things here are simply smashing and everything I expected and more.

They have these cool cholla cactus here that the birds like to make nests in. Also they have wild tarantulas and Kona found one on our bike ride. I found a Yucca and it stabbed me in the leg. There is also a picture here of part of the border fence. They have pedestrian fence and vehicle fence. This is the vehicle fence.

A little bit of the scenery, me next to a really old monument put up by the Mexicans to define the border, my nifty security clearance badge, the old border fence, and the new border fence. Also note that I am wearing steel toed boots, a safety vest and hard hat. I have to wear all of this everyday ALL day.

Here are some pics from New Mexico/Texas. I live right on the border-technically I live in Texas and I work in New Mexico. Kona and I explored a biking and hiking trail together. All the plants here have huge thorns or small ones that get stuck in you.

This is a shot of where I live from a tree in the back yard. Kona and I are both up here and it reminds me of a time when I was in third grade and home alone and scared. I had freaked myself out pretty good and decided the safest thing to do would be to lock the house up like no one was home, climb the biggest tree in the yard, and tie the dog to the base of it.

It's hard being all by myself in a city that is not dog friendly and not very safe (less than a mile from Mexico and ranked above the national average for vehicle thefts and rapes). I pretty much don't go outside after it's dark and try to always lock everything up. It kind of makes me wish I had a more secure vehicle. This summer when I locked my keys in my truck, a guy I work with broke in in less than 30 seconds. I was grateful, but a little suspicious. I've forked out the cash to stay in a hotel because I'm a scardy cat and don't want to camp here. Plus the free breakfast is nice. The hot tub is closed for maintenance but since I am here alone I guess the bathtub will do just as well. Another perk of being by yourself in a hotel is you can eat chips and dip in bed. Also you don't have to worry about if you shut the door to the bathroom. I'm going to institute tomorrow and will ask around to see if anyone has a room for rent. There are some places on craigslist, but I want to try at church also. I need a place with a yard-which usually means I have to pay more-but I found out today that there are ABSOLUTELY NO DOGS ALLOWED! at work. Yeah, they weren't very nice about it. So Kona has to waste more of her life in a backyard while her owner works like a dog (don't know where that phrase comes from...Kona seems to have it pretty easy, along with every other dog I know) to pay off stupid debt. Never again though. After this job I'll be debt free and can take whatever job I like, even if it doesn't pay well.

Here's a pic of where I'll be...or at least where I'll be close to. Well, I got a call while I was at Home Depot yesterday from a lady about a job...and lucky me got hired! So I'm going to New Mexico to be the token Biologist monitoring the building of the new border patrol fence. the best part about it is the pay. It lasts for 16 weeks and by the end of it I'll be debt free!! Wahoo! Oh and not to mention it's by a place called Hueco Tanks (pronounced wake-o) that is supposed to have some of the best climbing in the WORLD! I leave this weekend and start on Monday which makes things here a little hectic for the next few days. As usual, I'm up to my neck in projects around the house to keep me busy while I'm jobless. So I will be scrambling to get them done and get my stuff packed and find place to live. I think it's going to be really hot down there. The weather up here is absolutely perfect right now. I kind of wish I could stay another week or so. There's still a lot I wanted to get done. Well, I'm off to do what I can...

Life in the Highlands

So there was this book Kori and I listened to on the way back from Texas called "Atherton". It's a fictional story about a land created after we humans ruin this earth. The new "world" has 3 divisions: the low lands, Tabletop and the Highlands. Of course all the stone hearted, privileged people live in the Highlands. Sometimes I think about that while I'm here living at Mom & Dad's... in Highland. Definitely privileged, but not stone hearted people live here.

Anyways, so Belle (Mom's puppy) graduated from puppy kindergarten the other day. She had to pass lots of "tests". Including walking down an isle that dog treats had been strewn down and not picking up a single one till Mom said it was ok. Congratulations Belle! Mom, Kona and I were there in support. When she graduated they gave her a milkbone that was about the size of her. I don't think she really knew what to do with it, but Kona was sure jealous.

Also below is a picture of a turtle I drew in Texas. I got a bunch of pictures off my phone with a new memory card I got, so I thought I'd put some up.

This is an ad I saw at the airport. I liked it so I thought I'd share. In case you can't read the writing it says:
"My friend just got himself a brand new 62-inch plasma tv. He says when you're watching a show, it feels like you're actually there. Seems like it would make watching the nightly news a little freaky though. I haven't had a chance to see his TV yet, but it's on my to-do list. My friend says you can't find a panoramic picture like it anywhere. "anywhere?" I said. "yeah, anywhere," he said.

My life lately

To be honest my life lately has been pretty boring. I was thinking about it last night and I feel pretty spoiled. I was laying in a hammock watching the sunset against the palm tree in my backyard on the island where I live. I see the sunrise over the ocean most mornings and get paid to work with sea turtles. I don't have to pay rent as long as I do yard work and I never have to worry about wearing a jacket. Why am I feeling stressed and unsatisfied with my life? I'm not quite sure about that one, but I am sure about how I feel. I'm bored. I'm bored at work, I'm bored at church and I'm bored with going to the beach. I know sounds bad, but I'm there 40 hrs/wk for work and it's not like normal beaches. There are soo many bugs and gross things in the water I don't even like to go in anymore. And I can only handle so much sun before I feel like I'm cooking myself. Oh, and an explanation for being bored at work? Well, I do "work with sea turtles" but lets be honest-I've seen about 5 turtles since I got here and I work 40-50 hrs/wk. Most of my time is spend washing and gasing vehicles or trying to make myself appear busy so our completely insane project manager will think I'm a good worker and let me patrol more. Oh and by the way, NEVER take a job that has patrol in the job description. All that means is that you will be driving around by yourself waiting for something to happen (which I guess is better than wandering around headquarters trying to create work for yourself). BORING! I do like my job when something is happening (turtles nesting or hatching) but I wish we could just be on call or something. I can't handle much more of this. But that is the beauty of the seasonal worker. I don't have to. So now I am faced with what to do when the job is over. I think I'll just apply for as many jobs as I can and take the one that pays the most...and wont be boring.

Well, I finally have a day off to myself and feel like I have time to post on this thing. I've been doing a lot of goal setting today. Hopefully I can eventually get ALL of them. Yes, I'm going for 100%. I've tried to set realistic ones and have thought out what all I need to do to get myself there.
On a different note, work is going well. I'm adjusting to life here in Corpus Christi and beginning to find things I like to do. Or I guess accepting that I don't always have to have something to do. Kori and I are moving to the island next month. We'll be living with a lady from church who has 2 extra rooms and an extra bathroom. She already has 2 dogs and it's a small city lot, so it will be a full house but worth it to be closer to work, have cheaper rent, and not be bothered with some other things that I won't go into detail about. It will be a bummer for the dogs to leave their 2 1/2 acre lot with a pond, but they will just have to deal with it.
Oh one of my goals was to actually remember all of my friends birthdays. (I know, saint like right?). I apologize to all of you that have felt neglected by me on your birthday. I'm sure everyone who reads this has at one point or another. Anyways, to help me out with this goal...would you please tell me your birthday? And the birthdays of anyone you know I'm friends with? I'm going to finally write them down somewhere. Oh and mom, don't worry about sending me yours or the rest of the family's...I do have those ones. Thanks everyone!

While we were at the ark we saw pretty much every turtle we have here in texas. Including a part albino one. All of the turtles at the ark are injured in some way and undergoing rehab. They even have turtle acupuncture!

My first encounter with a live turtle. I look worried in the picture because this one is sick. It beached itself and was found by a volunteer. We got to go pick it up and take it to the local turtle rehab place called the ark.

So the picture below is of a young turtle who we found dead on the beach. Shelby, one of the biologists, was showing us how to do a necropsy...or in other words - cut the turtle open to find out why it died. I didn't stick around long enough to find out what killed this turtle, but the 2 we did before it died from injesting fishing line and drowning.
