I finally got some pictures off the computer at work. We're releasing baby turtles. It's cool to be on the other side of the "red tape" I've heard so much about as a kid. There are also pictures of turtle tracks and a nesting turtle I found. Yay!

Wow..! Those tiny girl turtles are awfully small to be released out into the unknown sea without their mother. How do you suppose they will survive when they are so very small? Big fish could easily eat them...and they look so innocent and cute...How could they possibly release them so young? Why so young?

In nature the mother turtle lays her eggs and returns to the ocean. The turtles hatch out and run to the water and grow up all by themselves with no mother. They are a good bite sized snack-about 1 in 100 will grow to adulthood. That is why each mother lays 2 to 3 nests each year and each nest has about 100 eggs in it. About 15 years ago they did a "head start" program where they raised the turtles for 1 year before they released them but I guess the powers to be decided it wasn't worth it.
